This past February, board game and puzzle creator Ravensburger teased a new expansion for their popular Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons game. At the time, very few details were released, but based on a cryptic image from their Instagram account, many fans believed that the expansion would be focused on Ravenloft.
We now have confirmation that the new product will indeed be set in the Domains of Dread, with the product officially known as Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons – Ravenloft. The box set will require the base Horrified D&D game to play, but introduces five new playable characters and four new monsters, all of which are based on Ravenloft lore.
The expansion will be coming out in July 2026 but is available as an online pre-order exclusive from Target. Below, we take a closer look at to what to expect in this latest blood soaked board game add-on.

What is the original Horrified D&D board game about?
Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a co-operative board game designed for one to five players and is based on the popular Horrified: Universal Monsters game, which has since released several other versions, including Horrified: World of Monsters, Horrified: Greek Monsters and Horrified: American Monsters.
The D&D version is set in Undermountain, the sprawling, monster-filled mega dungeon located beneath the streets of the city of Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms. Your goal is to work with other players to defeat four different D&D monsters (the Beholder, the Mimic, the Displacer Beast and the Red Dragon) by solving a specific mini-game style puzzle associated with that creature.

Players take on the role of one of five different iconic D&D classes: The Rogue, The Wizard, The Fighter, The Cleric and The Bard. On your turn you can choose from a variety of actions, including: moving, collecting an item, directing NPCs to safety, solving a monster’s puzzle, battling a monster or using a class ability (this latter action involves rolling the D20 that comes with the game, which is a first for the Horrified series).
The fun comes from attempting to outmaneuver monsters and working collaboratively with other players by stringing together various actions and abilities. There’s also an element of unpredictability in that after each player turn you draw from a random monster deck, and monsters themselves also have their own abilities which are determined using the game’s D20. In many ways, Horrified is quite similar to the popular board game Pandemic, in that players work together, have a wide range of actions to choose from and are essentially racing against the clock to complete objectives.

What is the Horrified D&D Ravenloft expansion?
The new Horrified Ravenloft box set is designed for use with the existing D&D Horrified board game. As an expansion it introduces five new Heroes, each inspired by on the character classes from D&D and possessing unique skills and an associated cardboard standee token.
The expansion also introduces four new monsters taken from Ravenloft lore. These are: the Vampire Strahd Von Zarovich, the murderous living doll known as a Carrionette, the witch Baba Lysaga and her walking hut, and the evil sentient Gulthias Tree. Each of the monsters also gets its own miniature.

When is the Horrified D&D Ravenloft expansion coming out?
Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft will be released on July 19th, 2026, at which point it will be available online and at local game stores.
How much is the Horrified D&D Ravenloft expansion?
The expansion will retail for $34.99 USD (not including shipping and handling), but has a pre-order price of $29.99 USD from Target.

Final thoughts
The original Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a solid game that’s been generally well received by both board game and D&D fans, so it’s no surprise that an expansion has been developed. The timing also makes sense as this June will see D&D returning to the Domains of Dread with a new supplement entitled Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which is also part of a larger Season of Horror initiative running from April to June 2026.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will do a complete deep dive and review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order the new expansion now from your local game store and on Target.
